Writer's Block: The X-Files Birthday

Today in 1993, The X-Files first premiered. What's your favorite episode? Have you ever experienced paranormal activity yourself?
The sad part is, I can't pick an episode. I loved all I saw. I loved anything with the Lone Gunmen in it. I particularly loved the one about the cigarette smoking man's back story. 'Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable because all you get is another box of chocolates..' I don't remember the rest word for word, just the gist of it.

I loved the one with Invisigoth and that virus thingie. The one where the aliens were impregnating zoo animals and stealing the embryos. The one with the conjoined circus twin that popped out of the guy's side and killed people. I could go on and on.

The X-Files is one of maybe three television shows that have shaped the way I am and see the world. I was young enough that I was still rather impressionable, and while I've grown cynical in my old age, and no longer fervently defend the Roswell crash and related miscellanea, I still don't trust the government to tell us the truth should they have it, and I do still think something happened in New Mexico.

As to anything paranormal? The only thing I can really think of was that night back in my bedroom in Puerto Rico. It was the middle of the night, I'd been asleep, and I woke up to realise the air conditioner was off, and so were all the lights. Power failures aren't a big deal down there, but used to sleeping with the AC on, the lack of it woke me up. I opened a window as soon as the room got too warm, and I could see a glow coming from outside. Pretty pale white. I peered out and saw that the whole hill behind the house, which had a few neighbourhoods on it even back then, was pitch black as well. The sky, though, was pure white.

From the clouds right above the hill I saw this pretty big round light, whiter and brighter than the sky itself. It was coming down on a vertical descent, and there was a line of tiny coloured lights spinning around the sphere. It was moving pretty slowly, at least in perspective. It came down over the trees, turned to the right at a 90 degree angle and zoomed into the treeline. I freaked the fuck out. LOL. I still can't explain what it was. It must've been around 13-15 years ago.

Fuck, I'm old.

And now for something completely different:

The episodes you mention make me want to watch X-Files all over again.

I still remember how I felt when I watched the first episode, completely by accident. That was the beginning of a love that would fade only with season 9. This show is the only one I can claim having ever been a fan of. Hell, I bought my first TV just so I wouldn't miss the episodes - which then aired on Friday nights around 10pm in France. I remember being an X-Phile before being an X-Phile was cool. For a long time, Chris Carter was my hero.

Writing this made me want to watch X-Files all over again too. I might have to see if surfthechannel.com has it.

I wonder if we still have that software to make dvd copies. Cause we have seasons 1 through 5, and could even manage to make it to the post office this week. Do we have your address?

You may have the Palmyra, PA address. If you do, that still works. If you don't, email me. Because that would be awesome.

And of course, since I fail at checking comments, I'm only reading this now.
Ingrid is entirely faily at keeping addresses in anything resembling an address book of any sort, so I'll just go ahead and email you.
