What a bargain - two in one day!

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 12:51 AM
Well, midterms are done. FINALLY. As anticipated, db was quick and painless and only took me about an hour to get the paper written, so that was submitted with plenty of time to spare. Web design was ... nnnnnnnnnngh ... not so easy. I didn't actually submit until 12:03 AM, which is 4 minutes late. Oh well, maybe he won't be a nitpicker. I doubt it though, because he marked me down on last week's assignment for not having a 'tiled background picture' on the page. And if he had looked at the .css page he would have seen that the navigation panel background was a tiled .jpg, it just happend to be a solid color because I HATE tiled background pics. They look horrible and tacky and I REFUSE TO DO THAT. So I got around it by setting 2px by 2px gray box as the tiled background of the nav panel. If I end up with a B in his class because of that one little oversight on HIS part, I'm gonna be a not so happy camper.

Anyway I ran into a bit of a snag when I realized that my portfolio is missing. I know damned well that I saved every single ad I have ever designed as both a .qxd and a .pdf to my thumb drive when I cleaned out my desk. But they are not there now! I think I may have run out of space and transferred them to my mother's laptop as a temp measure, but at 10:30 at night I couldn't go around there and start rummaging around on her machine, so I had to improvise. Fortunately, my banner ads are still running on the website, so I just did a save image and put a couple on the page. For the print ad page I put in a background image I created for a .ppt a few weeks ago. It should be good enough for his purposes. And the pages all looked pretty good, except for the banner ad page. They just wouldn't line up the way I wanted, so I finally gave up and left them one on top of the other. For the purposes of the project it should be ok. I'll fix it when I have more time and can play with it a little more. If anyone wants to take a gander, the new and improved OBX MEDIA web site is up and running for all to see. Some of the pages are still templates, with no real content. The only ones that are live are index, about, contact, banner ads & print ads. Yeah.

Whatever. I need to forget about classwork for a while and just relax or I'm going to go bananas.

I also need to get my butt into bed, but I'm too wound up just yet. I have to find something to force me to relax enough to sleep. Maybe I'll try meditating - though that hasn't been successful lately. Meph.

(Shhhh, it's still Tuesday on the West Coast.)

----

Note: Recs are gathered by all members at [info]crackenterprise for each day and not just the day's coder. Between the twenty-two of us, we hope no stone is left unturned in Star Trek fandom. We will try to label all recs as clearly as possible and according to the author/artist's original notes. Please remember to read their headers for additional information. And most importantly, don't forget to comment! Happy reading!

----

At the going down of the sun by [info]cupiscent (Kirk, Spock + ensemble; gen)
Summary: "Rules of the universe," he declares, and then corrects himself before Spock can get his astrophysics on. "Rules of humanity. Warriors who've drawn weapons, shed blood, triumphed together must drink together." (The consequences of actions, and the rules that you cannot bend or ignore.)

Notes: The author says it's a "character manifesto crossed with an epilogue [she] felt necessary;" I say it fills all the holes at the end of the movie and then some. Incredibly deftly drawn voices and the perfect touch of humor.

This Is Growing Up by [info]dsudis (McCoy, Chekov; PG; 1326)
Summary: "So you lost one today."
Notes: A unusual take on the post mortem of losing Spock's mother during transport -- we don't usually see McCoy in this scenario, and the differences are interesting.

untitled by [info]ifyouweremine (Spock, baby!Kirk, Scotty, McCoy, G, 245 words)
Summary: In which Kirk is not quite himself.
Notes: A short splash of adorable that will leaving you grinning helplessly. So true to character in so few words!

Tryin' to chase the Lone Ranger down & why can't we just forget, ride off into the sunset? by [info]tigriswolf (various characters, PG, wordcounts 200 & 250)
Summary: Two stories in sequence, death fic.
Notes: Beautifully crafted and achingly real.

Joy Ride by [info]cards_slash (Kirk, Spock, McCoy, R, 4330 words)
Summary: SOMEWHERE on the kink meme I swear someone requested a car chase sequence? (I swear) if I hallucinated it then: Spock, Bones, Kirk—car chase.
Notes: Short, sweet, and that rarest of finds - a well-written action sequence with everyone in-character.

Welcome to Starfleet by [info]barrowjane (Spock, unrated)
Summary: Spock adjusts to life on Earth.
Notes: There aren't even words for how wonderful this fic is. You get the sense of Spock's loneliness and frustration as he goes through his first year at the Academy, which is also, as far as I know, his first time away from home. The interactions he has with everyone - his classmates, his mother, his father - are fantastic and so in character, but I have to say, his ongoing battle with the replicator in his room is by far my favorite.

The Stars Go On Forever by [info]ever_obsessed (Winona Kirk; George, Jim, Sam, PG-13, ~3,100 words)
Summary: Jim always settles at her side, head tilted back, eyes open and fixed on the night sky.
Notes: Gorgeous, achy Winona-centric piece that also gives great insight into Jim. I love that ever_obsessed has made her into a full, round character - by no means a paragon, but certainly not a villain either.

You're Gonna Make It After All by [info]igrockspock (Gaila, Uhura, Kirk, Spock, R, 6600 words)
Summary: Two indecent exposure citations, one best friend, one amazing sex partner, one unexpected mentor, and a Starfleet-funded study of intercultural sexual norms. Sounds like a normal academic year for Gaila.
Notes: This technically contains some het, but really it's about Gaila making friends, finding her place at Starfleet, and exploring her freedom. Really great insights into Gaila's character and into some of the difficulties presented by interculturality.

First of all, a thousand apologies to foodie readers, but I didn't take a single picture of the amazing-looking and -tasting food at Alinea. I enjoy seeing other people's food pix, but I just can't do that in fine-dining situations ever since I once saw Chef Pete scowling at a diner who was happily clicking away, and anyway you can see better pictures on their website.

I did, however, manage to take a few goofy camera-phone pictures of me and Neil:

This one is blurry, but I like the contented, slightly dazed look on Neil's face, which pretty well represents his expression throughout the meal:

And here's Neil in the photographic style of Nick Rhodes (yes, I was enough of a Durannie to buy Nick's incomprehensible photo book):

Here's a Magnificent Mile skyline near our hotel:

Mr. Beef from the outside:

Mr. Beef from the inside:

And the winner is ... Portillo's!

(I know I said I hated taking food photos, but Mr. Beef was empty and nobody notices what stupid touristy shit you do at Portillo's.)

In keeping with its Richard Bachman theme, this scary scale in my hotel bathroom weighed me ten pounds lighter than I weigh at home despite my having consumed a 23-course meal the night before:

Garden photos coming soon, I promise.
Title: Dear Savas (The High School Edition) #1

Author: Koren M. ([info]cybermathwitch)

Disclaimer: Not mine, not at all. They belong to [info]jessofthebugs , and the universe belongs to Star Trek & etc.
Pairing: Joanna McCoy/Savas, even though they don't know it yet. ;)

Rating: Teen, 13+

Type: Series, Remix, Epistolary

Warnings: Some language.

Word Count: 1,164

Summary: Jo's starting her Junior year, and things aren't going as planned. Meanwhile, Savas is having his own educational not!angst typical of the Vulcan teen.

Notes: One of the best things about writing fanfic with your best friends is that sometimes they're very nice and let you play with their toys. Many, many, many thanks to [info]jessofthebugs for letting me play with this. She's also an awesome beta, and checked it over for me. Any remaining errors are my own.

(This is in the same universe as the Dear Daddy series.)

It's the start of Junior year...
